    Hi malaga

If your looking for property there look to the west of the town centre.
Google Earth has a metres above sea level device so you should get a good idea of the high and low ground.

Alpha to boom thanks to mine boost

THE Alpha community is ecstatic it will benefit from massive infrastructure upgrades as part of a new mining project, but there are fears the town will lose its identity in the whirlwind of big business.

Barcaldine Regional Council Mayor Rob Chandler said under an agreement with companies involved with the $6.4billion Alpha Coal Project, the town, home to a few hundred people about 400km west of Rockhampton, was set to receive massive infrastructure projects, including a swimming pool, airport, sewerage upgrades and new housing.

He said the mines had vowed to help improve facilities in the small regional town.

"We've got some firm commitment from them to give us a hand around the place," he said.

Cr Chandler praised the project's mining representatives for their willingness to work with council and regional communities.

"We've been talking to GBK Hancock for four years; they've been very good with their consultation both with council and the community," he said.

However, Cr Chandler conceded that big mining plans come with big issues.

He said other towns in Central Queensland had faced long-term social issues after introducing a large non-permanent population into small towns.

According to Mr Chandler, the Barcaldine council was working hard to combat this issue and ensure the small community of Alpha didn't get lost in the whirlwind of commercial mining.

"That's our number one concern; we want Alpha to keep the way of life they're used to and not lose the sense of community," he said.

The issues Cr Chandler is concerned about were highlighted earlier in the week when Queensland Government MP Vaughan Johnson slammed camp living conditions in the Rosewood mining camp at Blackwater.

Mr Johnson likened the camp to a battery hen farm.

But Cr Chandler hoped with proper planning and consultation, it would help Alpha avoid the mistakes made in other regional mining towns.
