If he had used the reason of protocol that PMs and Opposition leaders don't travel together to war zones, he would be potentially implying that he was planning a visit. He knew he wasn't to imply anything along those lines due to strict security with his planned trip.

Gillard would have known he would be lost for words when confronted by surprise by the media.

It appears she had lined the dominoes up - all she had to do was mention that he declined her invitation to topple the first domino. The media took it up from there. And Gillard looks up sweetly and says, "who me - what did I do"...lol

Would be better if she could get on with running the country instead of trying these sorts of stunts to get rid of Abbott.

He must be a real threat...
