"Alsons gets sizzle
IF there is an extra spring in the step of GMA loyalist Tomas Alcantara these days, it is because the market value of the family’s Alsons Consolidated Resources tripled in just a month.
This week particularly, the thinly-traded ACR sprang into life, closing yesterday to P1.48 a share from Monday’s starting bell of P0.89.
At yesterday’s close, the market value of ACR had already ballooned to P8.68 billion.
A company official who asked not to be identified said the recent market interest may have something to do with the expected conclusion of an earlier announced sale of the company’s remaining 3.27- percent stake in the Tampakan prospect north of General Santos City, the largest undeveloped copper-gold mine in Southeast Asia.
ACR has agreed to cede for an undisclosed amount its 3.27-percent stake in the venture to its Australian partner, Indophil Resources, which in turn is in talks with possible buyers for the combined Indophil-ACR holdings.
Based on an earlier disclosure of Indophil, ACR could expect to receive about Australian $41-million cash (about P1.8 billion) from its share of the joint sale.
