What I read is that they were at "human touch temperature". This implies not cool, rather warm but not too hot to burn. But cannot find any specifics on operating temperature and energy losses. This last item is key so would appreciate it if anyone can point to research that quantifies this. Another aspect of this would be the copper connecting wires will be wicking away significant heat 'down the line; that should also be measured.
