Following the launch, the joint venture carried out extensive cycling simulations to evaluate the temperature
profile of the internal components of the battery. Typically, the charging process involves a net endothermic
(heat energy absorption) reaction, whereas the discharge process leads to an exothermic (heat energy
release) reaction. The simulations indicate that the battery can undergo charge and discharge cycling while
maintaining stable internal temperatures without overheating, even under extreme conditions such as a
desert environment, where the ambient temperature was recorded at 60°C. No instances of overheating
were reported during these simulations.
And from the announcement on 7/11/2022
Since the CERENERGY® batteries can operate
at a very wide temperature range, minus (-) 40 deg C to plus (+) 60 deg C, the battery pack will be ideal for
the cold European climates. In addition, being fire-proof, the ABS60 battery packs will be safe to installed
indoors where lithium-ion batteries are prohibited.
The SAS batteries are internally high temperature batteries (operates at 270-350 C) but are fully insulated so the external of the battery module is at touch temperature. The core temperature of the battery is self-sustaining and does not require cooling like lithium-ion batteries.
As you said all battery technologies will loose energy through heat loss.
The Cerenergy battery cells can at least re-use the generated heat during charging (net endothermic reaction). IKTS have done a lot of work optimising the insulation and the temperature gradient to the outside module such that 'stable internal temperatures without overheating' can be maintained.
My understanding is each battery cell frame (5 frames per module) will have its own heating element.
These would only be used when the battery is 'cold', so probably upon installation or after other non-use periods.
I expect the battery will retain a temperature of > 270C for more than one day without use, however we are have not been provided that level of detail and if I ask they won't tell me!
Another aspect of this would be the copper connecting wires will be wicking away significant heat 'down the line; that should also be measured.
I'm not sure what you are talking about here. Are you talking about the electrical connectors between the 5 module frames?
There is no copper in the in the battery module but putting that aside, heat loss external to the battery does not count.
