The 3-month treasury bill started falling from 5% in August that year as interest rates were cut in America. Gold surged from $650 to $1000 as real interest rates went negative in a HUGE way. Why hold USD when the interest received doesn't even cover inflation?

Pensioners in Australia have the same problem today.
