Munchy, this is not investment advise but I would suggest you check with the ATO. To my knowledge there is no restriction on the purchase of shares by a SMSF. You may be confused with the best practice of super funds only buying secure ASX300 shares. This is because they are trading with other peoples money. In addition to SMSF not having restrictions on shares bought many think that they cannot trade in shares as they thought this would be against the ATO's restriction on running a business, this is incorrect share trading is permissible. The main thing to remember is your SMSF is designed to support you in retirement thus high risk shares should be avoided.
