One day the US may come to view their own oil companies as the enemy within. Its them that lobby to keep Americans "addicted" to oil. Similar situation here where despite our own vast gas reserves, ethanol potential and comfortable outdoor climate we still fill our gas guzzlers with expensive imported petrol and drive everywhere we go.
