Because they are the numbers that can be processed on a daily basis by DHS/CBP.
This doesn't mean they are released. They are assessed if they are genuine asylum seekers, if not deported.
In December 2023, the U.S. Border Patrol recorded 249,785 encounters or 8057 per day. This would trigger the mandatory closing of the border(it would already be closed but stay with me), the border would remain closed until the number of recorded encounters dropped 75% for 7 consecutive days, to 2014 encounters.
At which point the border can reopen for processing, not releasing.
