The lancet trial was retracted, but there is overwhelming evidence in the eyes of the FDA in America (which is where the Drs are based).
The FDA believes on the basis of that evidence that there is little or no benefit and a greater risk of side effects.
The withdrawal doesn't mean that the evidence was that it works, just that the data the research relied on wasn't reliable in its conclusion it didn't. That was one study which was a retrospective study, not a control group study.
There have been at least 3 blind control group studies that I am aware of and one report says 13 or 14 that shows it doesn't work.

Your incredible coincidence is true though. Those people were incredibly naive. Which makes wanting to take their claims at face value dangerous.
