CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- BP will pay Texas $50 million to settle violations of environmental protection laws related to the discharge of pollutants during and after a deadly March 2005 refinery explosion, the state's attorney general said Thursday. The agreement "resolves the state's enforcement actions against BP Products for unlawful pollutant emissions at its Texas City refinery," said Greg Abbott. It also "reflects the State's commitment to protecting air quality and holding polluters accountable for illegal emissions," he added. The total sum includes $500,000 in costs that the attorney general's office incurred; the rest will go into the state treasury.
