When we talk about Niobrara source rock formations, most people focus on the eastern bank D-J basin in northeast Colorado and southeast Wyoming. But the Niobrara deposits are on both banks of the old seaway. SSN leaseholds in southwest Wyoming (Great Green River Valley) are just in that area.

150 millions to 80 millions years ago there was a Western Interior Seaway streched from the polar region to the Gulf of Mexico. It was between todays Rockies at the west side and Ozarks at the east side. The North American plate rose and the sea dried out. In todays central Canada, Montana, N. Dakota, S. Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas and Gulf coast, it left thick sedimentary rock formations which provide us the major N. American oil and gas deposits.
The Niobrara shale formations are deposited on both sides of the old seaway. This source rock formation scattered in large continuous oil/gas reservoirs, and as dry outcrop rocks used for making cement in N. Dakota.
The west side mainly in the Sanwash basin, Great Devide basin, Washakie basin in southwest Wyoming, and in Northwest Colorado, Muffet, Rio Blanco, Routt counties, and out crops in Garfield county. Under the currently producing Williams Fork and Mesaverde formations, in the areas Niobrara exists underneath the similar Mancos, Baxter, Pierre, Cody and Fort Union formations. SSN southwest Wyoming leases are right there.
The east side deposits mainly exists in the Denver-Juleberg basin (D-J basin), underneath the currently producing J-sands, Mowry, Codell and Nio formations, as their source rock formation. In southeast Wyoming it is in Laramie and Goshen counties, i.e Silo and Dell fields, where oil rich Niobrara has been found. SSN leases are just north nof that area.
In northeast Colorado, it has been found in Weld, Morgan and Platte counties, in oil rich fields such as the latest find in Weld. SSN has talked about very probable Niobrara, Codell and Greenhorn formations under the currently producing layers, in their D-J basin leases.
