My take on this is that Amgen asked Insulet to CUSTOMIZE devices for them and got Insulet to agree to do it exclusively for Amgen. That's in the PR. I interpret this to mean that Amgen is playing the field and without investing anything has Insulet trying to customize their currently approved device so it can serve as a generally usable WI. If Insulet gets that done before Unilife, or even close to in time to Unilife, they will probably be able to move their device through the FDA process more quickly than Unilife and Amgen will then use their device for their then available products, relegating the Unilife device, if ever fully developed, capable of being mass produced and FDA approved to second position.
I can see no other reason that Insulet would agree to give Amgen exclusivity.
