Hi waza150, How could you 'know' for sure unless you actually work for Orica itself? Or are you an official who goes to site to make sure Orica complies with regulations? I would love to feel as sure as you that nothing could ever go wrong. Personally, I dont think that any amount of safety regulations can guarantee 100% that an accident or a malicious incident could ever occur. Sorry, but Orica has failed environmental and safety standards repeatedly at the Newcastle site and it is because of this history, I have little faith in their ability. The thought that, that same organisation is in charge of a massive stockpile of a potentially hazardous material worries many residents - to the extent that some have formed groups to bring these issues to light and call for the removal of Orica from the Newcastle area. I am not associated with any of these groups but, unless Orica reduces the size of the stockpile, I will consider joining those residents in voicing my concerns/ lobbying local politicians and writing to media outlets.
Since you are 'in the know' waza150, can you please tell me why Orica cannot store the majority of this explosive material away from the Newcastle CBD?
Would you please tell me what went wrong with Orica's safeguards when the harbour was contaminated? Why was Stockton enveloped in a toxic cloud? If these accidents have happened in the past, why couldn't another accident occur?
