By learning from past mistakes you futureproof the company. The track record locally has not been a good one and people are rightly wary of Orica's ability to keep them safe. You are right, I personally do not invest in Orica, as environmental pollution is a risk I am not willing have in my portfolio. Whether I hold ORI or not does not make my opinion on its operations invalid. The ammonium nitrate storage in Newcastle is all over the news! Ignoring the problem won't make it go away!
Isn't it important that community perception of the company is a positive one? Why not do some of the things locals are wanting in order to keep operating on their doorstep? Why not house 5000 of the 6000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate in a remote area? It may mean you could avert a groundswell of resident groups pushing for the removal of Orica from Newcastle altogether! If you work at Orica or own Orica shares, the last thing you want is protesters at the gates or on the News. Work with the people, dont ignore them - even if it's only out of concern for the company itself!
