You say... 'The stringent safety protocols in place within Orica cannot be compared to the disaster in Lebanon'
Are these the same 'stringent safety protocols' that have led to chemicals leaking into Newcastle harbour and the clouds of toxic particles falling over Stockton's residential areas over the years? With this track record, why would the people of Newcastle feel confident that Orica has this under control?
Is holding three to six times the amount of ammonium nitrate (the same material which exploded in Beiruit) situated only 800m from Newcastle CBD totally risk free? 100% safe? Because, if it is not 100% safe then it should be housed in a remote area away from a city.
I am surprised Orica doesn't work to improve public perception of our area by being seen to address residents concerns. Downsize the stockpiles in a major way at the very least!
Unfortunately the Orica brand is pretty tarnished in this part of NSW.
