AMP Australia CEO Scott Hartley unveils new leadership team

AMP Australia CEO Scott Hartley has unveiled his new leadership team, alongside a fresh operating model that will separate the platforms and superannuation divisions, as he looks to put his stamp on the business.

The seven-strong leadership team that will sit under Mr Hartley includes three new hires from outside the business.

Former Yellow Brick Road CEO and NAB executive Matt Lawler has been appointed managing director of advice, while new chief investment officer Anna Shelley joins from Equip and Catholic Super, where she led the investment team for three years.

Ms Shelley replaces Debbie Alliston, who retires at the end of July.

Sunsuper’s chief financial officer Jason Sommer will also join the wealth manager after being named its new director for transformation and investments.

Ilaine Anderson, who has been acting director for super and retirement since the start of the year, has been permanently appointed to the role, while Sean O’Malley has been appointed managing director for AMP Bank after acting in the role since February.

Rounding out the new leadership team are Edwina Maloney and James Kent.

Ms Moloney has been named director of platforms and joins from AMP Capital, where she is global head of product. Mr Kent stays on as chief technology officer.

“As well as bringing together an experienced leadership team, we also have an updated operating model to deliver a flatter structure to enable empowered, distributed leadership.

“This will improve efficiency and ultimately the performance of the business by giving our leaders end-to-end operational accountability,” Mr Hartley said.

“The new leaders have all worked in large institutions and small to medium-sized businesses. They will bring a healthy perspective on how we ensure AMP Australia is a lean, efficient and competitive business,” he added.

Mr Hartley expressed confidence in the team’s ability to deliver on AMP’s strategy.

“We’ve looked for individuals who are excited about the opportunities, have a firm grasp of the challenges we have as an organisation, and a strong sense of urgency about the changes we need to see in our business,” he said.

The updated operating model will mean a sharper focus for the separated platforms and superannuation divisions, with the structure providing end-to-end business accountability for each director, the wealth manager said.

Mr Hartley, a former CEO of Sunsuper, was named head of AMP Australia in late 2020. He took over from Blair Vernon, who was in the position in an interim capacity following the abrupt departure of former Alex Wade last August.

Mr Wade, who only joined AMP in 2019, departed after allegations emerged that he had sent inappropriate photos to a female member of staff.

The appointment of AMP Australia’s new leadership team comes as Alexis George prepares to take on the CEO role at AMP Ltd, replacing outgoing chief Francesco De Ferrari, who announced his retirement from the top job at the end of March.

AMP’s shares tumbled 3.5 per cent in Tuesday’s session to $1.08 as the broader All Ordinaries index dipped 1 per cent.
