I think it's a moot point.
The other side of the equation is a willing buyer.
life insurance is not exactly flavour of the month.
no point holding out for that "good buyout price" if there are no buyers on the other side prepared to pay the price.
Reality is that blame on this should be put on prior management.
life should have been offloaded in years past.
life insurance is getting harder, the pool of consumer participants peaked many years ago, and demand is on a structural secular decline.
There is also significant tail end pricing risk that can't easily be hedged by writing new policies, given reduction in demand for policies
