Amprius Technologies (NYSE AMPX and market cap US$354 million) is developing high performance lithium-ion batteries. It came out with an announcement on 14 January this year, which I only just spotted. It is of interest because it provides a benchmark for the battery performance of LIS.
In October last year LIS announced it had achieved energy density of 498 Wh/kg on first discharge and 456 Wh/kg after formation cycling. This was based on 10Ah semi-solid-state cells.
In its announcement (below) Amprius claims for itself "the best-known commercially-available energy and power performance in one cell." It continues: "With an impressive energy density of 370 Wh/kg, the SiCore cell extends runtimes while still delivering exceptional high-power performance exceeding 3000 W/kg." Later on Amprius says "pre-production 10Ah samples were delivered to six of Amprius' customers, enabling real-world testing."
Comparing energy density, the performance of LIS exceeds Amprius by 23% (using 456 Wh/kg for LIS and with both using comparable 10Ah cells). On this metric LIS is well ahead of Amprius.
Amprius attaches importance to the metric of high-power performance and as mentioned it exceeds 3000W/kg. I do not know if LIS has published the performance of its cells using this metric. If anyone knows this number for LIS it would be great of they can share it here so we can compare it to what Amprius has reported.
But using the one available comparable metric of energy density, the reported performance of LIS is well ahead of Amprius.
