For Trump, nothing else exists. So in assessing candidates, that should be your primary method to predict who he chooses. Forget about the track record of the judge or their fitness for office. This is a tactical decision to help achieve one thing, and one thing only. Trump's re-election. It may be a particular demographic he needs. Are the Catholics locked in? If not, go for Amy Coney Barrett. If they are, go for someone else.

It may well be a left field, inflammatory choice. As conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh noted last week, Trump is going out of his way to pour gasoline on every fire right now, to incite dissent and stoke up the whole "law and order" scare campaign. So why not put up a totally divisive choice, that would send people out into the streets in their millions to protest?

The resulting chaos could scare enough people to get Trump over the line.

Florida is not locked in, and Trump needs it and conservative Cuban Latino voters to get out and vote. Enter Barbara Lagoa.

A broad cross-section of Florida Republicans lined up over the weekend behind Barbara Lagoa, moving the federal judge and Miami-born daughter of Cuban exiles up the shortlist of potential replacements for Ginsburg. Florida's electoral college votes are seen as critical for his path to re-election, so Trump is intensifying his courtship of Hispanics, especially the heavily Republican Cuban American community in South Florida. Within 48 hours of Ginsburg’s death, a push for Lagoa has taken shape in the battleground state.
