China's army of unemployed grows
New statistics in China show a dramatic increase in the number of unemployed people.
The China Daily newspaper says by the end of last year five million people had lost their jobs at state-run enterprises - a figure that almost doubles the official figure of 6.8 million registered unemployed in urban areas.
A senior official Wang Dongyan told the paper that entry into the World Trade Organisation would do little to relieve the unemployment problem in the near future.
Correspondents say the figures are a rare admission of the scale of the unemployment crisis in China.
Just two days ago, President Jiang Zemin warned that China must tackle poverty in rural areas and among laid-off workers to ensure social stability.
