The maker of a heart pump implant has ordered a recall after five people with it died.
Wear and stress on an electrical wire in certain batches of the Thoratec Company's Heartmate II Pump led to the recall.
In a five-year clinical study, five patients out of nearly 2,000 using the device died. Thoratec is urging patients to come in and have their implants checked.
The implant is used as a temporary solution for patients waiting for heart transplants.
