The opportunities abound in picking up bibs and bobs of silver at spot or below even though now it is a little harder as more people are getting wise to the value of silver . A self taught education and understanding of silver in coinage has boded well for me over the last few years by being able to identify the vast array of world coins that are on sale on ebay , at auctions ,coin shows , pawn brokers and general markets , I have a my scrap box which has over 12 kg of coins that I have picked up at spot or less at the time of purchase and it pays to know the ASW ( actual silver weight ) of each coin . A lot of the times people don't know the value of what they are selling .
Some tips , Always check out coins from the British colonies ,pre 46 mostly 92.5% or 50% after 46 countries like NZ and Britain took silver out of their coinage , Canada was 80% till 1968 and went to 50% . we are talking circulating currency here. The US coins with a dime value or more have 90% 1964 or before , I personally avoid morgan dollars because of the amount of fakes that are around . The south American coins are all over the shop usually 72% , 80% which are similar to European content because of the Spanish influence or 90% for example in Panama which aligns with the US . In Europe the 2 countries which were obliterated in ww1 and ww2 Holland and Belgium seemed to keep silver in their currency right up to the 70,s which might tell you something about keeping wealth . By the 1930's France had basically stopped using silver and Germany needs lots of research as the multitude of states that comprised Germany each had there own currencies prior to ww1 but after ww2 Germany , Austria and Switzerland (Helvetia) continued to produce silver content till the 70's. Africa and Asia coins mainly have there currencies produced and circulated by their colonial masters .
I was at a market last year and a guy had his box of world coins and I spotted a 1947 Panama 1 balboa and I offered him 1 dollar and he said ok ,it contains 27 grams of silver .
Anyhow for those who like treasure hunting I hope this helps not to mention the historical knowledge gained by learning about them.
