Remember that John Howard changed the tax laws to make foreign companies immune from tax in Australia on capital gains.
The gigantic - and probably overdone - selloff in stocks such as NAB may have something to do with this.
A multinational insto may have much to gain by generating a big loss on stock held in an Australian domiciled entity - which could be offset against profits earned on other stocks - while generating a large tax-free profit on matching positions in an offshore account.
