Today's article in The Australian 'Bluescopes Steel's troubles blamed on giving alarming control to unions' misses one major point not covered by expert Collier and Co. and that is of the high levels of demarcation that exist within this industry, in other words even though a person is capable and competent in doing work they cannot because they are not in the right union. The unions divvy up the work to be carried out and each union has coverage of a certain type it can perform. This is the bane of the industry, and not the wages and payments. I think for all Colliers wealth of knowledge, although she is on the right track, but obviously knows nothing of the machinations of the cosy alliance between management and unions, yes alliance, management have never pursued their right to allocate work based on qualifications and ability.
