I asked my mum about this. She said when we disappeared all day she knew where we were at all times. When I think back we never did venture very far or if walking to school always stayed on the correct route. So maybe the sense of freedom was more a mental feeling, but a nice healthy one imo. So perhaps it was a con lol.
