China accounted for more than 80 per cent of global rare earths supply in 2017. Rare earths are used in a range of consumer goods and military equipment, including smartphones, satellite navigation systems and stealth planes. China's dominance of the market and the strained relations between the US and China prompted President Donald Trump to include the issue of rare earths on the agenda for the recent visit of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull. Trump has announced that the US and Australia will work together in finding and developing new reserves of rare earths.
