Following the recent signing of Australia's free trade agreement with China, New Zealand-owned Fonterra says it will use the expertise it gained through New Zealand's FTA with China to help develop its Australian dairy exports.
Business in China has been booming for Fonterra, the world's leading dairy exporter. Since New Zealand's FTA commenced in 2008, Fonterra's dairy sales in China have increased eleven-fold. Revenue from the country more than doubled in the past year to NZ $5.5 bn, overtaking combined sales from Europe, Australia and the Americas.
In addition to boosting dairy exports, Fonterra is also expanding its Chinese farm network, investing more than NZ $450 million over 2014 and 2015. The aim is to raise the current annual raw milk production from 110 million litres to 1 billion litres.
In Australia, Fonterra currently collects almost 1.6 billion litres of milk annually from 1400 farmer suppliers and their 300,000 dairy cows. The company has major processing plants in Victoria and Tasmania which are used to supply export markets. These include Australia's largest dedicated infant formula factory at Darnum in South Gippsland which Fonterra jointly owns with Chinese baby foods firm, Beingmate. Growth in Australian infant milk formula exports is anticipated to soar as a consequence of the FTA, which will phase out the 15 per cent tariff on infant milk formula over four years, without the "safeguard" clauses which constrain the upside for New Zealand.
Fonterra now faces the challenge of expanding the volume and quality of milk production to meet Chinese demand.
