Vatican award for stem cell research

Australian scientist Professor Silviu Itescu has been recognised by the Vatican for his work in developing adult stem cell therapies. He received the inaugural Pontifical Award for Innovation from the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Culture in Rome.
The stem cell technology developed with Adelaide University allows adult stem cells to be harvested, stored and used in unrelated recipients for multiple clinical applications. The techniques can be used to treat inflammatory and immune diseases of the joints and lungs, diabetes, vertebral spine degeneration and heart conditions.
The award was presented in April 2013 as part of the International Vatican Adult Stem Cell Conference and coincided with the Catholic Church's endorsement of adult stem cell technology.
