What are valid reasons for having these weapons?
The most valid reason that comes to my mind is the right to remain alive.
In fact, that would be the most overiding reason I can think of.
We give police here weapons of all kinds so that they may defend themselves against crazies, criminals etc.
We give them guns, stun guns, capsicum, anything as long as they do the job which is to protect the citizens and either arrest or stop the criminals, one way or another in a life threatening situation.
The same applies to a country that is under siege.
Australia, luckily has never had to experience this problem.
Hypothetical scenario:
Imagine if the Japs had been fighting skirmishes with us, non stop for 50 years and they started beating the war drums and made it quite clear what they had in mind for us and we knew 110% that they were not kidding, and supposing we were technically ahead of them both militarily and scientifically, would we wait for them to have a go at us, or would we take care of business once we established beyond any shadow of doubt what they were going to do?
And assuming that in order to do that we needed sophisticated weaponry because they outnumbered us 40:1, wouldn't we,
a) use some of the weapons to show them what we are capable of and
b) let them know that they could expect worse?
That is the deterent. But sometimes the deterent alone is not good enough.
We would be foolish if we simply bluffed that we had these weapons. We would be suicidal if we did not, and we would be derelict of our duty to protect ourselves if we had the weapons and did not use them in the event that there was a clear and imminent danger.
The policemen at the scene of a crime where multiple murders have been commited, seeing the murderer still well armed and capable of commiting further murders will take that person out...stone dead...if that is the only way.
And they can only do that if they are armed correctly and better than the criminal.
Magnify that to a beleaguered country like Israel for example, and it then makes perfect sense why it should have the weapons that it does and will let it's opponents know that they will be used..........
And if they have to be used because the opponents think it's a bluff........well, such is life.
Israel faces an enemy ratio of 40:1
That means no second chances! (as opposed to the 3rd and 4th chances it has given to it's enemies)
It has the moral, legal and human right to be the best and most fearfully armed country in it's region.
That is the only way it will be left alone.
Any sign of weakness from Israel and it's possibly......all over red rover.
No other country in the world faces such a scenario.
And if we did, we would do the same thing as the Israelis, exactly .. as would any other country!!
The bottom line......Israel has the most valid reason in the world, more than any other country in the world, to posses the weapons that it does, both that we know about and what we don't.
I hope she never has to use them, but if there is a need, she better have them....and mate.....she does.
