My understanding is that the smoking cessation trial was always a way to get important information on Nadolols effect on healing of the lung. While the drug was indicated as an important addition to the arsenal in smoking cessation, it was more a way of getting results on sputum samples to help design the trials in the oral programme and to prove/disprove the hypothesis around that programme. There is absolutely no reason to doubt the efficacy of the drug in smoking cessation after the interim results released in January. This is the fastest track to market and should be the end of money problems. The inhaled programme is the real bonanza. That is the reason for the sputum samples currently being analysed. We should have results soon. It doesn't matter if they are released before the end of September or a little later. As for the number of options, they indicate nothing but the greed of the New York bankers and the lack of an alternative.
