Towers yards 4600

CLOSE to 5000 head of store cattle went under the auctioneers' hammer at the Charters Towers Special Store Sale last Friday.
And to the delight of sale vendors, most prices held their ground with some values 10-20c/kg above recent saleyard figures.
One of the catalysts for the sale was the annual store input from Len Knuth whose 578 head from St Pauls Station swelled the yarding to capacity.
Agent for the St Pauls cattle, Matthew Geaney, Geaney's Stock and Real Estate, Charters Towers said the extended season, a result of the good wet, ensured the record yarding was of quality stock and he was not surprised that such good values were achieved.
"Graziers will always pay for quality and that was what was presented here today especially the St Pauls line of cattle," Mr Geaney said.
Another factor contributing to numbers were cattle sold on behalf of collapsed managed investment scheme company, Great Southern Plantations (GSP).
The 1200 heifers from GSP had been on agistment in the Belyando district, including on Labona, Belyando Crossing.
GSP also kept agents and auctioneers busy at the weekly Gracemere sale last Friday with a further 1100 steers selling through the saleyards.
In a scene mirrored in the Towers, the seams of the Gracemere Saleyards were fit to burst with 4600 head being yarded in total.
Agents reported the market for all meatworks cattle remained strong while the store market held firm for the large yarding of Brahman steers on hand.
Charters Towers selling agents for the GSP cattle, Landmark, were unable to reveal if more Great Southern cattle were likely to hit the market in the near future.
Despite the largest yarding for 2009, the Charters Towers Saleyards have maintained solid prices for most lines at the Special Store sale last Friday.
Charters Towers Combined Agents yarded a total of 4660 cattle with store cattle consisting of 2307 steers, 2227 heifers, 55 PTIC cows, 58 PTIC heifers and 13 cow and calf units.
The cattle came from a wide geography of area including Einasleigh, Greenvale, The Lynd, Mingela, Giru, Ravenswood, Townsville, Pentland, along with local and other coastal areas.
The store steer section of the sale met with keen competition with a large gallery of local and southern buyers bidding on good quality lines which sold on a dearer market.
The 2227 heifers sold on a less vigorous market and heifers sold to values similar to the last two sales in Charters Towers.
Steers up to 200kg averaged 194.4c/kg, while those in the 200-280kg range averaged 171.8c/kg.
The 280-330kg category steers sold for an average of 168.3c and those over 330kg averaged 146.4c.
