Guys, I repeat, 15% of the periodic table.
Sure there are workarounds such as the Tesla Induction coil motor.
It's a while since I read the specs on that (and I'm not an expert) but as I recall it's essentially a clever electromagnet setup and compared to REE magnets
- Weighs more
- Less efficient and in particular
- poor torque at low revs.
All those coils probably cost a fair bit to produce too.
Anyway the clear message I get is while civilization won't crash without REE it'll do quite a bit better with them. Quibbles about specific apps doesn't change that big picture IMO.
