I did know that JH was a pilot, that sentence was meant to be neutral.

I should have written "However, it would be cheaper to hire a plane sometimes than to charter a flight to some of the locations, *when one* can pilot it himself" or something to it clear.

However, as JH said, it took so long for him to verify the fitness of the plane each time (as is required by the CAA), it wasn't worth his time to do it. A shame, because as you point out with the distances and locations involved it was a money saver.
