    At the treaty of Versailles in 1919 Australia was afforded full status as a nation in its own right - it would appear as though this was in recognition of Australia's role in WW1.

    Under our constitution this is not the case - the Queen remains our ultimate head of State. John Howard was presented with a detailed submission to this effect but apparently chose to set it to one side:

    "Australia The Concealed Colony"
