It suspect it was more than just selling the country out for $$$, the main agenda was de-industrialisation and reliance on either a central union or another state i.e. China
Jeremy Lee has some great lectures on youtube from around the time everyone was signing up to UN accords, as per his perspective working in the department of Agriculture and being close to the ground with farmers. His message was basically, there was no officially policy announced, no one was consulted let alone asked to vote on the decision to sign up to the UN which destroyed many industries.
Just like "Big Australia" and multiculturalism and gun bans - Australians weren't consulted (nor voted) it just went through and became law.
