Ex Smorgon Steelmark metals here - structural beams and flat plate products.
I started after Smorgon Steel acquired Eagle and Globe and Union Steel. It was a disaster. Low morale, growing pains from getting too big too soon, trying to implement SAP as well.
Execs inside the company were torpedoing it to eventually sell it off cheap to other interests. Wasn't surprised when it folded a few years later.
BHP steel was beautiful. Straight as an arrow, defect free, came slightly larger so you could cut the ends off square etc. Always had test certs.
Chinese steel was just junk. Never square, always rusty, it just looked cheap. If an engineer asked for test certificates we had the same 4 certs re-used over and over.
Surprised a few buildings around Melbourne haven't fallen down by now to be honest.
Too many overheads in trying to setup a steel plant nowadays in Australia. Doesn't fit in with our industries of making smashed av on toast and shitty reality tv shows.
