@pow4ade; Victoria already has a viable alternative airport at Avalon that's even serviced by fast metro trains and more directly linked to the Greater Melbourne transport network.
IMO Victoria would be better served by expanding services at Avalon.
The lease owners of Melbourne Airport have ruthlessly exploited what has been a near monopoly for decades - it's eye-watering parking fees have caused other parking operations to spring up outside the airport precinct. Melbourne Airport's reputation for efficient, quality service is poor and it's demands for even more $Countless $Billions of taxpayers' money to fund a private rail service to further increase their $Profits adds insult to injury.
The time has indeed come when instead of wasting even taxpayers' money on private airport operators that government instead invested in fast rail between Melbourne and Sydney.
