"School illiteracy is no fault of children or their parents. Nor is it any fault of our excellent teachers and fantastic school principals"

Absolute nonsense. How about some personal responsibility?? Children are taught by their parents and teachers. Nobody tells parents how they have to teach.

My son is 4 and we read every day and I have taught him to sound out words up to about 5 letters atm. trying to give him a head start before school. If you make reading for enjoyment a family priority the kids will want to join in and learn. All you have to do is try. There are literally thousands of resources for all types of approaches to learning to read.
