In a nutshell, apps like skype, facetime and viber use the internet to carry their traffic, which gives reasonable results within a country, but for true long distance international calls the quality suffers. This is inherent in the way the internet is set up and is a fundamental limiting factor for apps that run in real time.

Norwood takes advantage of high quality but very low cost fixed telecom lines for the long international hop, but route the first segment via VOIP, and the last segment via VOIP or the local phone system. The result is very low cost (but not free) international calls that have significantly better quality and reliability than skype, viber and facetime.

Better still, you are reachable on the same number as your phone and can call other mobiles directly rather than being app to app like skype or even iphone to iphone like facetime.

I've used worldphone overseas and it was great, voice quality was excellent. The only time the app failed to put a call through due to a poor quality 3G data connection, skype and facetime also failed.
