I agree with both points about Merkel making long-term strategic errors with those decisions.

Becoming dependent on Russia for winter energy supplies made Germany less secure. And suddenly opening borders to so many refugees with no checks or warning to fellow European countries made Europe less secure.

Generally, Merkel has been a very steady, capable leader. Those two mistakes, however, have had far reaching effects.
