Ghana's power crunch could impact AngloGold Ashanti

The Volta River Authority (VRA), in Ghana, had advised South African gold miner AngloGold Ashanti that it might be required to reduce its electrical power consumption, primarily due to water shortages impacting the VRA's power generating facilities.

The company said in a statement on Wednesday that it was not clear what the consequences could be for the company's operations in Ghana. This, it said, would depend on the outcome of discussions with the VRA and mitigating steps that might be taken to conserve power utilisation. The company said it would comment on potential impacts at Obuasi, Iduapriem and Bibiani once these discussions have been concluded.

During the quarter ended June 30, 2006, the three mines produced some 147 000 oz of the group's 1,4-million ounces for the period.

“AngloGold Ashanti, as part of the local Chamber of Mines, is meeting with the VRA to examine means of addressing potential disruptions to power supply,” the company said.
