PERTH – In its most audacious exploration gambit to date, AngloGold has quietly staked out several thousand square kilometres of ground in the diamond fields north of Wyndham in Western Australia. The mass claim staked by AngloGold follows the discovery of gold in a sample taken by associate company De Beers, which is exploring for diamonds in the region along with Australian junior Striker Resources.
Barrie Parker, the operating general manager of AngloGold Australia, told Miningweb he had been approached by De Beers after its exploration work in the area turned up some anomalous gold areas. "De Beers has been looking for diamonds in that area for years and we often talk to them about areas that are of mutual interest. They invited us to look at some of their data and of course we said yes," said Parker. That was "months ago" and the results piqued AngloGold's interest to the extent that it took up exploration licenses covering large tracts of strategic mining prospects in an area which has until now been ignored by gold prospectors.
