At the very least, the Animoca Unicorn NFT commemorates an important event in its history and blockchain gaming more broadly. On the proviso that the innovative disruption brought about by Web 3.0 is, over time, going to genetrate transformational shifts akin to the internet, then these NFTs might be financially valuable in 20 years time.
A lot will depend on the success of Animoca. For example, imagine what an Apple NFT minted in the late 1970s and distributed to a few thousand early investors would be worth today? Alternatively who would pay good money for an eXcite NFT (bought for US$9B in 1999 then declared bankrupt by 2001)?
Setting any speculative monetary value aside, is does appear to be an excellent marketing strategy as it is likely to garner a lot of media attention and will help to raise the profile of the company. If nothing else, it helps to create an image that Animoca is at the vanguard.
An NFT with some utility function is a great idea. If it did grant holders VIP-type status, it would be like a modern day version of holders of Disney being eligible for discounted merchandise and theme park entry. Such small perks can help to create a very loyal retail investor base. BrewDog is a good example that springs to mind.
