Initial explorations wells in a new basin usually cost more than subsequent wells. With time costs come down for many reasons - eg. experience gained on early wells allows more efficient drilling of later wells, an established presence in a basin leads to service companies establishing bases closer to the operation, service companies more willing to offer better pricing for an established operator in a basin....and the list goes on.
