It represents the range of flake sizes that can be produced from uncrushed ore using Talga’s electrochemical exfoliation process. They push an ion into the graphite which liberates the particles into the solution. He says that D90 is 10 microns i.e 90% is smaller than 10 microns.
Graphite ore usually requires many additional steps such as crushing, micronisation etc to produce premium micro-graphite and graphene <10 microns. Vittangi can produce it using electrochemical exfoliation directly from uncrushed raw ore straight out of the ground. It was a world first!
Jalkunen on the other hand can’t be turned into <10 micron size using electrochemical exfoliation from uncrushed ore. Jalkunen is still a fantastic resource that can produce premium anode material and graphene <10 micron but requires processing such as crushing and micronisation etc. It just shows Vittangi is a freak of nature.
Below is the electrochemical exfoliation process to create anode for Li-Ion batteries vs the standard processing. It’s meant to be much lower cost and more energy efficient than the standard process.
The interesting thing is the process in the Vittangi DFS doesn’t use electrochemical exfoliation, and it says it will be using the standard crush-grind-flotation method to concentrate the ore with 91% at premium <10 micron graphite flake size.
I noticed slide 9 of the AGM Presentation mentioned the US Patent that was granted back in 2017 for the process.
Why would Talga mention it if it isn’t going to be used? Is it possible Talga have been keeping this up their sleeve and may incorporate it into the process to further lower the costs? Or is it going to be used to create Talphene from the waste material?
