Obviously not ideal, obviously it would be better to have both FUM growth and performance fees but as he said it isn't always the way. I believe that most knowledgeable investors understand they won't out perform every single period because if they did they would hands down be the best fund in the world.
With this in mind that may be why Magellan is undergoing private equity ventures that have been a screaming success so far to mitigate for shortfalls in performance, diversification of income as sorts.
But boy when both line up there will be some money to be made!
