it's very simple, the money owed to shareholders becomes a liability for the company and has to be paid.Hence the general drop in share price on x dividend day. On rare occasions due to market forces the company might not trade as heavily down as the dividend amount.
This is all investing 101. Educate yourself and understand your investments and the mechanics of the market. You will be a better investor and not so emotionally involved in daily price movements.
