All the focus from analysts is on the declining net interest margin (NIM). However, CBA have always been ahead of the competition, as proved by this results, and although NIM is important - it is not the be all and end all!
Despite the competitive market for lending, CBA continues to gain market share in both household and business lending and this is eclipsing the cyclical decline in NIM.
In my mind, CBA's clear leadership in the digital transformation of the business over a long period of time (well ahead of its peers) is now bearing fruit, not just evidenced by market share gains - but also on the efficiency side of the business.
I guess that's what good management does, by innovating and continually reinvesting in the business they maintain their competitive advantage.
