They don't convey it very well in the announcement, but that tonalite is an elliptical plug, almost all the gold is hosted in quartz veins within the tonalite which is thin and steep, the only way you can test it is to really drill down the guts of the plug. Diamond holes are expensive so you want to maximise the data you can get from them, so this was the smart choice to make best use of their money.
